Meeting for 8th grade Athletes

There will be a meeting on Monday, May 5th at 6:30 pm in the middle school gym for all 8th grade students that are interested in participating in high school activities and their families.  We are having this meeting so students and families can meet the high school coaches, find out about summer activities related to high school activities, and can gain a level of comfort about participating in activities at the next level.

At this meeting you will find out about open gym times, team camps, practice dates, and other important information. You will get to meet the high school coaches and ask them any questions you may have regarding expectations for participation in activities and the differences between middle school and high school activities.  All 8th grade students interested in high school activities and their parents are encouraged to attend.

Spearfish Middle School Activities Banquet

The Spearfish Middle School Activities Banquet will be held on Sunday, May 18^th at 6:00 pm in the SMS gym.  All students who participated in any SMS activity this year and their families are invited to attend.  Please join us in celebrating the hard work our students, coaches, and advisors put in this year and in building community within Spartan activities. 

The SMS Booster Club will be providing the main dish and drinks.  Families are asked to bring a dessert or side dish based on the activity in which their student participated in as indicated below.  If your student participated in multiple activities, you are only asked to bring one dish.

6th Grade Volleyball

This year 6th grade girls have an opportunity to participate in an eight session volleyball program put on the by the SMS and SHS coaches.  Focus will be on the fundamentals of the game and the building the skills and interest to be successful in volleyball in the future.

Practices will be held from 3:30-5:00 in the SMS gym.  The dates are:

• April 28th
• April 29th
• May 8th
• May 9th
• May 12th
• May 13th
• May 19th
• May 20th.

Interested students need to sign up in the middle school office.  There will be no bus transportation available after practice, so students will need to have rides arranged at 5:00 pm each day.  If you have any questions, please contact Kevin at 717-1215 or at kodea@spearfish.k12.sd.us.

Lead-Deadwood Track Meet Canceled

The track meet in Lead scheduled for this Thursday has been canceled due to the weather conditions.  At this time, the host school has not indicated that it will be rescheduled. 

It's Spring at SMS

It looks like we may have turned the corner on Spring and we will be able to have events at their scheduled times going forward.  I'm sure I just jinxed us however.  The activities schedule for next week is below along with information on the upcoming transition meeting for 8th grade students interested in high school activities and the SMS activities banquet.

Transition Meeting

Activities Banquet

All students who participated in any activity this year and their families are cordially invited to the SMS activities banquet  on Sunday, May 18th in the middle school gym.  The banquet will begin at 6:00 pm.  The format will be similar to last year where the Middle School Booster Club will provide the main dish and families will be asked to bring a side dish or dessert.  There is no cost to attend.  If you have questions or would like to volunteer contact Kevin O'Dea.

SMS Track Meet Rescheduled

The Spearfish Middle School Invitational Track Meet has been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 8th.  Events will begin at 9:00.  It takes many hands to make a track meet run smoothly.  If you are able to help out for all or part of the day, please email Kevin O'Dea.

Track Update

Home Meet

As of now, the status of the home track meet scheduled for this Saturday is uncertain.  I will be meeting with the college tomorrow to assess the condition of the track and determine whether or not the meet can happen. There will be information sent our regarding the status of the track meet tomorrow.  Assuming the meet happens and you are available to lend a hand, shoot me an email. 

Conference Meet 

The Black Hills Conference track meet scheduled for Saturday, May 17th has been moved up to Saturday, May 10th.  Many conference schools have high school graduation on the 17th and were unable to attend.
