It's time for fall activity pictures. Coaches will be handing out packets to their athletes soon. Students should turn them in to the photographer when their team takes pictures. Please do not bring them to the office.

Back to School Notes
The first day of school is always an exciting time. As we wind down day one at SMS, here are a few things to consider.
We are truly excited and honored to have your student(s) with us this year. We appreciate all you do at home to get them ready for school each and every day and to assist in their learning. Please remember we always have the best interests of students in mind and that we want to see them every day. If they are going to be absent, please call 717-1215 as early as possible.
Students arrive at school in a variety of ways. Some walk, others ride the bus, get dropped off, or long board. If you are dropping off or picking up your student, please do so in the Canyon Street lot or on the east side of the building by McDonald's. Buses will be dropping off and picking up on the south side of the high school parking lot, so parents are not able to utilize that space. If you are using the McDonald's side, please head south when you do so that students do not have to cross the street to enter the building. It's much safer that way.
Also, please note that we do not have middle school activities on Wednesday's after school. SMS students participating in high school activities such as golf or soccer may have practice on Wednesdays. However, SMS sports will never practice on Wednesdays.

SMS Activity Vacancies
There are currently openings for the drama club advisor and assistant wrestling coach. The postings are available on District website.
Drama
Drama club provides an introduction to the theatre arts. This year it will begin on Monday, January 6th and run until the performance in mid March. Rehearsals are generally held twice a week. SMS Drama includes an introduction to the theatre arts, creative movement, and expression as well as the development of interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships. The advisor is responsible for teaching these skills and selecting the performance piece, assigning roles, set construction, and prop management.
Wrestling
Wrestling season begins on 10/25/13 and end around 12/20/13. Successful candidate must be certified, or able to become certified, in Fundamentals of Coaching, First Aid for Coaching, and Concussion in sports-what you need to know.

1st Schedule Change
The first schedule change of the year has already happened. The 7th and 8th volleyball games scheduled for Friday, September 20th, have been moved to Thursday, September 19th due to a conflict on our opponent's schedule. Both grades will begin play at 4:00.
The 7th grade teams will be playing the SHS auxiliary gym and the 8th grade teams will be playing in the Spartan Dome (SMS gym). Now I have to come up with a new date idea for Friday night, but at least I still get to experience some Spartan volleyball that week.

SMS Fall Activities Meeting
Where did summer go? It is time for fall activities to begin. To support this effort, there will be a meeting for all students participating in football, cross country, and volleyball and their families on Sunday, August 18th at 5 pm in the middle school gym.
We will meet as a large group for approximately 15 minutes, and then students and families will have a chance to meet with their coaches and review expectations, practice times, game schedules, and other pertinent information.
Following those meetings, the SHS Booster Club will be hosting a BBQ outside the high school commons. A general sports meeting and speaker will begin at 6:30 in the high school auditorium. All students participating in fall activities and their families should plan on attending.
