Homecoming 2012
When it comes to activities, homecoming is a pretty big week. We have middle school volleyball, cross country, and football in action this week along with all of the in-school activities such as dress up days, a pep rally, and the parade. Of course all of this culminates in a fevered pitch when the SHS Spartans take the pitch versus Douglas on Friday night. It's truly a special time of the school year.
As we enjoy all of the homecoming festivities, it's important to keep in mind why we have activities. Co-curricular activities support students in their learning and provide them with the opportunity to develop teamwork skills, practice time management, and to learn what it is like to dedicate time and energy to something greater than themselves, the team.
To this end it is imperative that students and families keep the big picture in mind during homecoming week and beyond. Remember, co-curricular activities support student learning, they do not replace it. Realize sportsmanship is something that must be learned early and honed throughout one's life. Go to a game to cheer for the Spartans not against the other team. While you’re there, watch the game, don't run around. Doing these things will make attending an activity enjoyable for everyone.
Go Spartans. Beat Douglas.

Fall Activity Pictures
Pictures for fall activities will be on Tuesday, September 25th beginning at 3:30 in the SMS commons. Football is first, followed by volleyball andcross country respectively.
Coaches will have picture packets for athletes. If you have any questions, contact your student's coach. It's always nice to preserve Spartan Pride for posterity. If you'd like a picture button of SMS activities director, Kevin O'Dea, contact the SMS office. Quantities are limited so order soon.
7th Football Changes
The jamboree scheduled for Saturday, September 15th in Douglas has been canceled. Currently that puts the 7th grade out of action that day. We are looking to add a game on that day or at another time to fill the void left by that cancelation.

8th Volleyball vs. Belle Fourche
All three 8th grade teams were in action at home versus Belle Fourche tonight. SMS Silver handled the Broncs: 25-20 and 25-23. SMS White used three sets to take care of business: 27-25, 19-25, and 15-12. The match between SMS Maroon and Belle Fourche was very spirited with a lot of great vollies, with the Broncs coming out on top 23-25, 14-25.
All three games were well played and the crowd was into the action on a warm evening in the friendly confines of SMS gymnasium, or as I like to call it the Spartan Dome.
Cross Country competed in the Belle Fourche Invitational and the 7th grade volleyball teams traveled to Belle Fourche as well. Results will be posted for those events as they become available.

First Competition
All of our fall sports teams will be in action this week. Volleyball kicks things off tomorrow against our heated rivals, the Belle Fourche Broncs. The 8th grade teams will be at home and the 7th grade teams will head north to the unfriendly confines of the Belle Fourche Middle School gym. The silver, white, and maroon teams will be playing for both grade levels. The first games begin at 4:30 and the games will run in succession.
Cross country also begins competion on Thursday. They will be headed to Belle as well to compete in the Belle Fourche Invitational. Racing beings at 3:30. Be sure to be prompt as SMS kids are quite fast. You just might miss them.
Both football teams begin their season on Saturday in Belle Fourche. They are participating in a jamboree with simulated game situations versus two teams. All scrimmages take place at Lou Graslie Field adjacent to the high school.
